3D video synthesis technology is an active field in current video researching. As a digital media with more information and including more data, because of its strong three-dimensional sense and depth characteristics, the three-dimensional video has gained more and more people’s attention. And an increasing number of scholars engaged in researching in this area. This paper presents a FPGA-based 3D stereoscopic video synthesis system which achieves videos synthesis in real-time. According to the principles of side-by-side format, left half video data of the synthesis video comes from the left eye video in the final output video. The focuses of the research include:(1) Design 3D stereoscopic video synthesis system hardware circuit. With the EP1C12Q240C6 N chip from ALTERA as the core of all circuit, design the hardware circuit including VGA input and output circuits, SDRAM control circuit, FPGA circuit and so on.(2) Design 3D stereoscopic video synthesis system appropriate programs. Including VGA display control program, dual videos frame synchronization program and SDRAM control program and so on. And these programs are downloaded to the hardware circuit board to build the platform.(3) Pretreatments of the original images. To reduce the interferences on the input video signal from the system and external environment; we should make process on original image noise reduction and image enhancement in the system. Improve existing algorithms to make it suitable for using in the FPGA.(4) Focuses on the algorithms of the dual videos synthesizing in side-by-side format. Before synthesizing the dual videos in side-by-side format, we need to shrink the original image in the way of down-sampling. So, we put in two signals and put out only one signal. At last, give corresponding simulation figures in MATLAB, and test these algorithms on the hardware platform.Final results showed that, this stereoscopic video frame synchronization synthesis system can complete all these works of transferring, caching and processing on the original images perfectly,and so on. It also can achieve excellent visual effects. This system can input two videos which have a resolution of 1920 × 1080, and it outputs only one video which still has a resolution of 1920 × 1080. This system fully meets all of the design requirements, and it also can maintain a stable working condition all the time.
