Wireless ad hoc network has attracted much research attentions recent decade and therefore has been employed in many fields, such as military, rescue, communication in emergency. Like any other network, routing plays the most important role in networking in wireless ad hoc network. Generally, energy supplying of the mobile node in ad hoc network is operated by batteries, of which is with a limited capacity. Therefore, designing and improving energy-efficient routings has the significance for research and implementation upon wireless ad hoc network. In this thesis, we conduct two studies on efficient routing in wireless ad hoc network by proposing a routing strategy, REA-AODV, taking frame retransmission in into account MAC layer, and by improving a proposed routing protocol, named ESA-AODV, taking the remain energy into consideration in mobile node. First, in the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol based wireless ad hoc network, the unreliable wireless channel usually leads to frame retransmission in MAC layer, which furthermore results in energy consumption in battery. AODV routing protocol is directly operated in wireless ad hoc network would result in inefficient energy utilization. To overcome this, we propose an efficient energy routing protocol, REA-AODV, taking the problem into account, in which the mobile node adopts total energy consumption, including that arisen from frame retransmission in MAC layer, as its routing index instead of the shortest path as the routing index in standard AODV. Second, the thesis proposes an improved routing protocol, ESA-AODV, by improving the available energy model in EA-AODV. In ESA-AODV, we class the available energy in mobile node into three levels, in which one level implies one special routing strategy. Furthermore, ESA-AODV improves the operation of HELLO message frame by distributing its functions to data frame and control frame, which can reduce the HELLO message transmissions and hence decrease the energy consumption. The two proposed efficient energy routing strategies are simulated in Qualnet and NS-2 and are evaluated by contrasting its performance with AODV and EA-AODV respectively. The results show that, with a slightly cost of end-to-end delay, the two routing protocols can decrease the energy consumption in wireless ad hoc network and hence increase the life time of the network.
