With the continuous development of mobile communication technology, WiMAX MMR network has become a hot area of research. Relay technology has become core technology for the fourth generation mobile communication standard WiMAX and it has been widely studied. This technology has many advantages, for example, it can increase system capacity, improve the data transmission rate and extend the cell’s coverage.IEEE 802.16 specifies the authentication of MS in order to control the access to WiMAX. Because all BS’s in WiMAX are connected through wired network and operated underwell organized networkmanagement,WiMAX does not create any problem due to mobile multi-hop architecture. In IEEE 802.16, BS authenticates all MS’s.After authenticating MS, the AS distributes primary master key (PMK) to the access control router (ACR) for later key generation. ACR and MS then generate authorization key and authenticate each other. Then, BS and MS can have the same traffic encryption key (TEK). All messages from MS will beencrypted by the TEK, and the BS can authenticate all messages from MS.This paper firstly introduces a number of key technologies of the WiMAX. Then, we introduces the existing two authentication schemes the centralized authentication scheme and the distributed authentication scheme before a new relay node accessing into the MMR WiMAX Network. Secondly a new hybrid authentication scheme is proposed based on the two existing authentication schemes. Then we use the queueing theory to analyse and compare time-delay of the centralized and hybrid authentication scheme under different relay nodes distribution. Finally the results of numerical analysis show that the hybrid authentication scheme has great advantage in the performance of authentication time-delay compared with the centralized authentication scheme.
