Wireless Body Area Network(WBAN) is considered as a special type of WSN. It consists of low-power wireless sensors nodes, which are placed or implanted on or inside of a human body for continuous health monitoring.Sensor nodes of WBAN is powered by battery, their energy is limited, and the data transmission of WBAN is heterogeneous and coupled, WBAN has strict requirements for the energy consumption and reliability of the data transmission. In WBAN, MAC protocol is responsible of conflict detection and processing, priority control, timeslot assignment, transmission order etc. So the design of MAC protocol plays an important role in the reliability and efficiency of WBAN. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to design an energy-saving and efficient MAC protocol based on IEEE802.15.6.Firstly, this paper introduces the research background and research significance of WBAN, and its application scenarios, the network structure and its characteristics. Secondly, this paper introduces the relevant provisions of the physical layer and MAC layer in IEEE802.15.6. Finally, this paper introduces two kinds of WBAN MAC protocol based on different super frame type and presents the design trend. In order to increase the energy-effficiency and data transmission’s reliability in WBAN, a new wireless body area network MAC protocol——AD-MAC protocol, which is based on IEEE802.15.6,is propased. The protocol uses the mixed type super frame structure and set the priority of nodes according to the sending rate of data and the type of data. The protocol uses node’s priority and the proportion of different priority nodes to total nodes to dynamically allocate timeslot, the length ratio of two different access period, size of node cache and transmission power control. So the protocol can ensure energy efficiency of data transmission.By using the OMNet++ simulation platform, we program AD-MAC protocol、CA-MAC protocol and evaluate the network performance of AD-MAC protocol, IEEE802.15.6 MAC protocol and CA-MAC protocol The simulation result verifies the superiority of the proposed AD-MAC protocol in terms of network throughput, packet loss rate, energy consumption, and delay.
