Wireless body area networks (WBAN) are important branch of wireless sensor networks in the biological and medical fields. They are wireless networks consisting of various types of sensors. These sensors are implanted in human body or distributed in the body surface. WBAN can be used to monitor, collect and manage different physiological parameters of human body (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, blood concentrations, body temperature, etc.) and environmental parameters around human body (e.g., humidity, light intensity, temperature, etc.). WBAN mainly have broad application prospects in health care and telemedicine. Moreover it is widely used in entertainment, sports, emergency relief, military communications and aerospace. Recently WBAN, as an emerging technology, have attracted substantial research work in many fields including network architecture, wireless communication protocol, wireless communication technology, data fusion, context-aware sensing and energy efficiency, etc. In this paper, we mainly study energy efficiency strategy of WBAN and have got two energy efficiency algorithms based on network coding and multi-relay cooperation, respectively. The main work and innovations are as follows: (1) In this paper, we propose a multi-relay cooperative algorithm based on network coding for the case of the transmission link outage in WBAN, and then analyze the system’s energy consumption under the algorithm and derive an overall-energy-consumption-per-bit formula. The simulation results show that this algorithm can greatly reduce network’s overall energy consumption and contribute to reducing the overall energy consumption of network with increasing the source nodes or reducing the relay nodes.(2) For the model of multi-source-multi-relay WBAN system, we propose an energy comparison algorithm of relay node based on multi-relay cooperation, and derive a network energy consumption formula. The simulation results show that this algorithm can also greatly reduce network’s overall energy consumption. Furthermore, under the circumstances of different source node and different relay node, we compare the overall-energy-consumption-per-bit between this algorithm and the multi-relay cooperative algorithm based on network coding, and show the respective characteristics of the two algorithms.
