With the aging of society and the sedentary lifestyle, chronic diseases such ascardiovascular disease and diabe are becoming the leading cause of death. Particularly, continuous monitoring of the activities is crucial because of the symptoms andchronic intermittent properties of these diseases. In wireless body area network(WBAN), every node has limited battery capacity. Specially, the implantable sensor isinconvenient to charge or replace the battery. The most important issue we shouldconsider is energy efficiency of WBAN. For such a network, we expect that networkis an energy efficient network. This paper will transfer energy efficiency issue toprolonging the network lifetime. That is to say, a wireless body area network can liveas long as possible. Considering medium access control (MAC), we prolong lifetimeof the network by scheduling the order of sensor nodes accessing the hub dynamically.Hence, we solve the energy efficiency problem. I have done work mainly includingthe following four aspects:Firstly, this paper study channel characteristics of the wireless body area network, path loss model and power delay profile model of wireless body area network.Secondly, this paper researches on the random access protocol, the maximumresidual energy protocol, the pure opportunistic protocol, the max-min protocol anddynamic protocol for lifetime maximization (DPLM) and prolongs WBAN lifetime byjoining the WBAN channel which has its own characteristics. We also do simulationexperiments to verify that these algorithms can prolong WBAN lifetime.Thirdly, through the understanding of the dynamic programming principles, thispaper finds a MAC scheduling algorithm which is suitable for WBAN. This algorithmis named as death probability protocol. By Monte Carlo simulation experiments, weprove that the death probability protocol can extend the network lifetime.Fourthly, this paper summarizes the maximum residual energy protocol, the pureopportunistic protocol, the max-min protocol and DPLM by defining different deathprobability. Death probability protocol is a generalized model for energy-efficientalgorithm and has laid a theoretical foundation for further in-depth study. By studying the model of the dynamic programming algorithm, this paperproposes an energy-efficient MAC algorithm which is suitable for WBAN. The deathprobability protocol prolongs WBAN lifetime and solves the energy-efficient problemof WBAN. It lays a theoretical foundation for future research on WBAN.
