With the popularity of viscosity measurement techniques, how to implement the accurate online viscosity measurement of engine lubricating oil in real time, forced to become a difficulty to be solved. However, the products available at present generally suffer from expensive, difficulty in maintenance, low measurement accuracy. Hence, the investigation of on-line viscometer is urgent and important for practical significance and theoretical research.In this paper, traditional research methods and mechanism analysis of viscosity measurement were summarized. Beside, an on-line measurement system of liquid viscosity was designed and investigated. Typically, research contents were listed as follow:Firstly, a study on the theory of viscosity-measurement mechanism analysis had been made. The mathematical model of viscosity measurement, the works of the rotational viscometer and the working process of the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder, was established on basis of the generating theory of the viscosity of the fluids. The main components of the sensor were calculated, which includes the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder, the balance spring, the rotating support. According to the above, an optimization scheme was proposed.Secondly, Model machine of on-line measurement system was developed. Each part of the sensor was machined. The size and type of the device, associated with the system, were selected. And, the signal acquisition circuit was designed. A set of testing system, which containing control system, sensing system, and data acquisition system, was prepared.Finally, the performance measurement of the line viscosity measurement system had been realized. A series of analysis of test outcome to viscosity performance were accomplished. The first, the calibration method of this system, system constants at different speeds and the linear fitting curve of system constant to speed were determined in calibration tests. The second, in the confirmatory test, system constants and the fitted curve is proved,and the measurement accuracy of the system was obtained. The last, the viscosity detection of the unknown oil was realized, factors affecting the measurement accuracy of the system were analyzed, and solutions were proposed, in the testing. In addition, the measurement technology of tuning fork was studied.The preliminary study of online measurement technology of viscosity was carried out in this paper. Model machine of on-line measurement system was designed. The feasibility of the system was verified through systematic test. An alternative project for online measurement technology of viscosity was provided.
