Comparative Study Of The Famous Journalist Piaoping Shao And Shewo Cheng In The Late Qing Dynasty

In the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic period, the unprecedented social contradictions caused an imbalance of the control of public opinion and the ideology. Newspapers and periodicals seized the moment and took on heavy responsibilities for helping people achieve political participation and construct social public platforms. Thus, "opening people’s mind" and "speaking people’s voice" became the mainstream values of the journalists. However, the means of expression which described as "solid shoulders are responsible for the world out of friendship, dexterous hands are to write popular poetry text" was not formed in one day. The formation of the presentation was closely related to some journalists like Piaoping Shao and Shewo Cheng, who defied brutal force and insisted advocating new ideas and new culture through newspapers in order to promote the development of the Chinese newspapers and periodicals and the education of journalism.Based on a comprehensive combing of the existing historical data and literature, this study systematically analyzed the thoughts of news, the practice of running a newspaper, the media management and journalism education of both Piaoping Shao and Shewo Cheng, meanwhile, synchronic comparison was made between the news thoughts at the same development stage of the two journalists. Results show the commonness of their news thoughts in different spaces-the pursuit of the independence of the newspapers and the freedom of expression on news, in addition, from the commonness we can also grasp the basic trend of the news thoughts which is described as "journalists serve our motherland" in the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic period. After that, we found the practice of running a newspaper the media management and journalism education of Shewo Cheng were beyond Piaoping Shao from which we can learn the growth process of the journalists at that time, furthermore, we can also understand the social value created by the freelance journalists through reconstructing the whole process from professionalism of journalists to professionalization of running newspapers in the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic period.
