Original Culture Television Program (OCTP), an entertaining TV program formation, utilizes the characteristics of television medium to show and inherit outstanding traditional culture. It integrates the elements of Chinese culture with the formation of modern TV programs. Three chapters in the dissertation will research Chinese OCTP’s construction on traditional culture.Chapter 1 talks about the revival and development of Original Culture Television Program in 2013-2015 which is not an accident but the consequences of multiple interacting elements which hasten this phenomenon, such as culture policy, industry, medium.Chapter 2 will point out that OCTP represents and constructs traditional culture through different symbolic languages. It mainly uses traditional language, semiotic language and audio-visual language to represent traditional culture. The representation of traditional language is achieved through the speaking subjects of traditional culture in the programs. The representation of judges and contestants, the main speaking subjects has two aspects:superficial content and deep meaning; and having a great say in the program, judges control and regulate the discourse and interpretation of traditional culture.Semiotic language exerts a more subtle influence on the construction of traditional culture and implies more meaning with audiences’more active interpretation than traditional language. Using image symbols, logo symbols and a series of symbolic texts, programs will draw the traditional culture. These symbolic languages usually take the form of images, body languages and the clothing of the contestants which weakens the preachy and makes traditional culture more accessible.Audio-visual language’s construction of traditional culture mainly relies on the advantage of television’s audio-visual media which integrates audio and visual images into the meaning of traditional culture. Through audio-visual rhetoric, visual metaphor and audio-visual persuasion, visual and auditory-based traditional culture are built and spread.Chapter 3 indicates that OCTP expresses the traditional culture in an entertaining form with edutainment, increases viewers and enhances the spread of traditional culture. OCTP is not a boring symbolizing representation but instead it blends many popular elements, such as spectacles, pop stars, ceremonies, packaging and games which are closer to the psychology of audiences. During the display and spread of traditional culture, the Program stimulates audiences’desire in a visual way by presenting spectacles; and taking advantage of star effect to enhance the influence of the program; and emphasizing on the ritual nature of television media and using an entertaining way to achieve the goal of cultural transmission; and enriching the audio-visual entertainment packaging to enhance audience enjoyment; and teaching through lively activities to make the program more interesting.Besides, the third chapter also explains that the dramatic construction makes OCTP bring audiences deeper entertainment experience. In order to attract more audiences, OCTP also enhances its entertainment by creating dramatic conflicts, situations and suspense to increase its dramatic quality and creates an entertainment atmosphere for audiences while their experiencing and learning traditional culture. These factors make OCTP driven audiences’enthusiasm of learning traditional culture, and promote the development and spread of traditional culture.OCTP constructs the media of traditional culture by its symbolic representation and entertainment expressing. Through this media construction, such programs create an atmosphere of traditional culture acceptance in public. To some extent, it also leads the social climate of inheriting fine traditional culture.
