Increasing demand for energy resources as well as the huge investment on infrastructure construction, drives the rapid development of petroleum, chemical, electric power, metallurgy, machinery, marine engineering, construction and other industries. The development of these industries boosts the procurement and transportation of a series of engineering equipment, provides an important opportunity for the improvement of transport technology.The single transportation is normally applied to the transportation need of bulky cargo for short distance, while the multimodal transportation is applied for long distance. Bulky cargo has the characteristics of high value, high risk, one-way, one-time. In the long distance transportation process, the huge cargo may affected by many factors inevitably, transportation equipment, road conditions, weather conditions, the transfer node, the slightest mistake of any part, will cause immeasurable loss, even seriously affect the progress of the project. Therefore, apart from choosing the low-cost way, the reliability should be considered in the process of the multimodal transportation for bulky cargo. Due to different economic characteristic of different modes of transport, routes. Transportation scheme reliability and transportation cost are in conflict with each other. Thus, carrying out the research of optimization of bulky cargo multimodal transportation routing based on reliability and balancing the interests of both sides Is of great significance.According to the substantial collected and analyzed references on the optimal transportation routes of bulky cargo, multimodal transportation and dependability. The core of the paper is path optimization of bulky cargo multimodal based on reliability. Aiming at the defects of bulky cargo transportation, we analyzed the characteristics of bulky cargo transportation. We construct a multimodal transport reliability-cost dual objective path optimization model which has the optimization objectives of highest transportation reliability and the lowest cost. We designed algorithm of the multimodal transport reliability-cost model by use of the NSGA-II genetic algorithm, and constructed a genetic algorithm flowchart for this multi-objective mathematical problem to obtain set of Pareto optimal solution. Finally, the construction of the model and algorithm are applied to the multimodal case, in which, the reliability and cost objective function have been optimized by using the MATLAB program. And then we obtained a set of evently distributed Pareto optimal solution, which is used to choose the reasonable transportation ways in terms of the different needs for decision makers.
