Nowadays, the cloud computing industry in a stage of rapid development, with the dramatic increase of cloud service data clusters, virtual machine migration technology becomes the solution of load-balancing, maintenance, disaster recovery and other hot issues. Block-migration of virtual machines need to transfer large amounts of data, especially in the environment of cross-regional transmission, network bandwidth becomes a bottleneck of the migration. Therefore, how to solve the problem of the massive data transmission, time-consuming, become a hot research field of cloud computing. This paper analyzes the present situation of the virtual machine migration, based on in-depth study of block-migration and the characteristics of virtual machine operating systems, this paper proposes a method for block-migration. Design and implementation of a virtual machine migration system named DVBS based on the method, and verify of the system in OpenStack. The main work is as follows:(1) Proposed a block-migration method, this method is designed for solving the problem of block-migration. Use source-side deduplication to reduce the amount of data transferred and the total time of block-migration.(2) Design and implement the Dedupe-based Virtual Machine Block-migration System, the DVBS includes: system load and status monitoring module, for monitoring the status of compute nodes and virtual machines. The VM’s file segmentation module, the checksum calculation module, the checksum finder module, the chunk management module and the virtual machine file management module, use the source-side deduplication technology in the process of virtual machine block-migration.(3) Analysis the system performance of the block-migration method. Analysis the data repetition rate of the virtual machine, total amount of data transferred, and the total migration time. Through performance analysis, the differences between operating system is smaller, the repetition rate is higher. The chunk size is smaller, the repetition rate is higher, but more time-consuming.(4) Based on performance analysis, experimental verification of the feasibility and effectiveness of the DVBS, comparative of the experimental data between theDVBS and the original migration scenarios. Experimental data show that when the differences between operating system is small, block-migration method can effectively improve the efficiency of virtual machine migration. However, if the operating system are quite different, the efficiency of block-migration method is lower than OpenStack.
