In the context of economic globalization and product personalization, a few companies have dominated markets and made profits because of the implementation of modularization. However, other companies have faced two main problems when trying to implement modularization:(1) modular design is fundamentally based on experience, moreover, the company lacks a process of modular design model to conduct practical design; (2) The process of modular design involves complex interdisciplinary knowledge, but, lack of a way to acquire and share that knowledge leads to design ineffectiveness. To solve these problems, this paper provides a modular design approach based on process model, whereupon enterprises can then customize specific models based on the common model to meet their own individual needs. To improve the design effectiveness, the paper provides a knowledge-based recommendation system that recommends the right knowledge to right users. And develop a product modular design system to support the designers’ work. The paper is organized as follows:The first chapter expounds upon the problems that different industries encounter in their product modular design, demonstrating the importance of product modular design based on process model. Then, the domestic and international methods of product modular design and knowledge recommendation technology are reviewed, whereupon the deficiencies of the current study are summed up, and research content and overall structure of the thesis is given.The second chapter describes the principle of modular design based on process model. First, it presents the technology of modular design based on process model customized the design process of special modular model according with the reality of the enterprises based on the common models. Then, the knowledge recommendation model is proposed; when designers are working on modular design, this system activates and recommends knowledge related to the user. Finally, it proposes the framework of process-based modeling and knowledge recommendation system.The third chapter focuses on the components of the modular design process model. First, it describes product modular design process from the perspective of both new and existing products. Then it presents the framework of product modular design process, the product modularization node element model, product modularization general model and specific product modular design model, organization model, task model, the personnel model, role model, authorization model, project model.The fourth chapter investigates knowledge-based recommendation technology. First, it describes the network model, source, storage, and expression of the knowledge-based modular design. Next, it proposes the modular design of the knowledge-based recommendation model, recommendation process, and matching method. Finally, it suggests a knowledge recommendation algorithm and evaluation method.The fifth chapter describes using process-based modeling and knowledge-based recommendation technology to develop a product modular design system, taking the modular design process of an industrial steam turbine as an instance.The sixth chapter summarizes the research in its entirety, recapitulating the major findings and innovations of the thesis, and proposing future research.
