Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a new technology which combines the sensors, computers, communications and other multi-disciplinary, it has broad application prospects in military and industry. At present, research for WSNs mainly confined to the field in homogeneous networks, but with the rapid development of practical applications in WSNs, homogeneous WSNs increasingly unable to meet the demand. Ulike homogeneous WSNs, sensor nodes in heterogeneous WSNs have different allocation of resources, such as computing power, communications power, storage capacity, power energy, etc., heterogeneous WSNs can better meet the needs of practical application scenarios for wireless sensor networks. Therefore, the rational design of routing protocols becomes one of the main research issues of heterogeneous WSNs.We design and implement a hybrid routing protocol based on heterogeneous WSNs relying on the state’s major science and technology projects,"wireless sensor networks based on IPv6network protocol development and validation".Firstly, we make an introduction to the concept of heterogeneous wireless sensor networks, including its architecture and some key technologies. Then, the technical details of RPL (IPv6Routing Protocol for Low-power and lossy networks) and Batman-adv (Better Approach to Mobile Ad-hoc Networking routing protocol) are deeply studied. On this basis, combining the characteristics and applications of wireless sensor networks, we introduce heterogeneous WSNs composed of two types of nodes, which effectively improve the transmission efficiency and lifetime of the network. Based on all these works above, we design and implement a hybrid routing protocol for heterogeneous WSNs. The routing protocol works in both link layer and the network layer, it divides the network into several subnets. We use the improved RPL within the subnet due to the limited resources. Between subnets, we use improved Batman-adv, making the routing and data processing functions focused on more powerful nodes, which help to meet the large-scale network and large amounts of data routing requirements. In addition, load balancing and routing repair mechanism are provided to improve network throughput and lifetime. We describe the main ideas of the design and message format releated, and propose solutions of the key mechanism and implementation of modules.Subsequently, an actual network environment is built to verificate the function of the routing protocol. Results show that the hybrid routing protocol proposed in this paper can not only increase connectivity and coverage of the network, but also improve the overall throughput of the network by balancing network loads. In addition its routing repiar mechanism makes a good performance in the event of node failure. Through a series of testing, the hybrid routing protocol can be verified effective and stable. At last, we summarize the paper and point out the work of future.
