Wireless communication technology is changing people’s lives. Among these, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) are more and more popular, and being researched and used by many institutions. Many researchers focus on the WMN routing protocols. They want to make some improvements to the performance of these protocols. This thesis is based on one WMN routing protocol-batman-adv. We analyse and make improvements to optimize it, combined with the characteristics of WMN.Our contributions are mainly reflected on three aspects:First of all, we analyse the source code of batman-adv in detail. We analyse the routing protocol packets format, the establishment and maintenance of routing table entry, as well as how the metric TQ calculate.Then according to the problems about poor performance and long convergence time, we make some improvements to batman-adv. Also, we use theoretical analysis to prove the feasibility of our improvements.Last but not least, we build a test bed in real environment and design experiments to compare the convergence performance between batman-adv and the version we make improvements. We get detailed experimental data. It prove that the improved version is effective on re-routing and shorten convergence time.WMN is more convenient for people to enjoy the benefits of wireless communication technology. And a good performance routing protocol is an important factor of WMN. Therefore, the work to improve the protocol is going on.
