With the popularity of smart phones, mobile Internet, the combination of mobile communications and Internet, develops rapidly. The main function of mobile Internet is interpersonal contact, and the most frequently used application is instant messaging tools.As a new type of mobile instant messaging tool, WeChat has made profound impact in society. WeChat explores the use of mobile phones and keeps running on the background all the time, delivering message immediately, sending text, pictures, voice and even videos, furthermore with various functions like LBS, social network etc. That’s why the number of users exceeded 600 million only in three years, which means WeChat has intimate relationship with interpersonal relationships and social network.This paper attempts to view from the user’s point, based on theories of cell phone communication and interpersonal communication, examine the relationship between WeChat use and interpersonal communication, in order to study the online interpersonal communication on mobile media, which belongs to effects study..Firstly, according to 5W theory raised by Lasswell, this paper resolves the basic communication characteristics and mode of WeChat, which include both the traditional features of cellphone media and another new interactive mode. Secondly, the paper focuses on the effects brought by WeChat as a new social media. According to media use and satification theory, audiences use different kinds of media for different purposes, in order to meet different needs and motivations. The paper attempts to introduce the concept of social capital to explain the communication effects of WeChat. Through the survey research, it’s found out the relationship between the use of WeChat and interpersonal relationship, specifically social networks, social trust and self-realization.To sum up, WeChat provides a new path of interpersonal communication. In terms of effects, it also satisfy users’ needs in social interaction, access to information, emotional expression and self- identification, which proves the significant effects of Internet media based on cellphones.
