Virtual plant technology is a technology based on the growth mechanism of plants, using of computer technology to show a technology in a two-dimensional or three-dimensional space. It involves many disciplines, such as: computer science, biology, graphic images, applied mathematics and so on. Virtual plant technology also in computer-assisted instruction, television and entertainment, landscape design, virtual field of agriculture and scientific research has outstanding value. Nowadays, with the rapid development of information technology, virtual plant research has experienced from the focus on plant external morphological structure simulation to its internal growth mechanism of the simulation, and the last consider the interaction with the natural environment, constantly extend further. This paper based on many scholar’s researches of the predecessors, mainly for the use of L-system simulation of the plant model too idealistic, does not comply with the principle of light to explore research, put forward some views and design an algorithm to optimize its validation; In addition, for the modeling process required data collection and collation, design a supporting data management system to improve the work efficiency. The article detailed work content points summarized as follows:(1) First, combined with our agricultural background conditions, the need of virtual plant research was proposed; Second, analyzed the research status of virtual plants and introduced the major characteristics of modeling techniques, and for the most widely used technology of L-system introduced in detail, from its origins to the later generation to flourish, had developed into a door at the core of virtual plant technology; Finally, the research and innovation of the full text was explained simply.(2) Mainly introduced the L-system of theoretical knowledge, from simple character definition to description of rewrite rules, and then to application of graphic display, the system which is the core idea of L-system was described; Then associate with real plants, respectively, in the two-dimensional and three-dimensional space, the using of special characters, rules and algorithms for presentation. Finally, binding the character and specific graphics, and legend the final rendering plant model.(3) The influence of light on plants for virtual plant models do not meet the principles of light and does not have the characteristics of the golden question, proposed a theory based on ant foraging ant colony optimization algorithm. First Open L-System simulation plant foliage distribution analysis; and then, using the design of ant colony optimization algorithm for virtual plant foliage to optimize the phototaxis competition issues; Finally, the plant ’s golden features of the experimental simulation of the plant model.(4) Aimed at the early stage of the plant modeling of large amount of data collection was difficult to manage, modeling process to generate new data was difficult to discern, the late data storage security and other issues, designed a plant data management system. First, the aims of system requirements, the feasibility analysis, puts forward the overall thinking of the system and framework; then according to their ideas and framework of E-R model design and drawing of a database table; Finally, choosing a plant to be tested and display the function of the system and process.(5) Reviewing of the full text, summarize the main paper work and the existing shortcomings, and some expectation of the future prospects work is bring forward.
