Virtual plant simulates the growing process of plants in three-dimension space on the computer, which generates three-demensional and visible computer model of plants individual or group. It can be mainly divided into two aspects: growth modeling and ecology modeling. Growth modeling simulates the morphological structure of the plant, namely the position in three-dimensional space of all parts of the plant. Usually, It can be mainly divided into two aspects two parts: on the ground and under the ground. Ecology modeling simulates the effect of the enviroment(such as illumination, water and so on) to the plant. And enviroment is so complicated that the research of ecology modeling often selects solo environmental factor. This paper mainly simulates the growth of the plant on the ground based on the deformation of the plant organs(fruit, leaf). We develop a platform for virtual plant based on the Open L-System. Present a new approach of growth modeling based on L- System and three-dimensional morphing, and discuss the problems of L-System in growth modeling and introduce another growth modeling tool -- virtual organ. The main researches and achievements are as follows:①Study the background and research of the virtual plant. Discuss the current popular methods of growth modeling, and bring foward their merits and faults. Mainly talk out the L-System and its important position in growth modeling.②Aim at the shortcoming of the L-System that can't model the deformation of the plant organs, this paper presents a new approach of growth modeling based on L- System and three-dimensional morphing: the basic idea of the method is to describe the plant topological structure with L-System, to deform the plant leaves and fruits by three-dimensional morphing. Demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by the experiment at last.③Develop a platform PlantLab v1.0 for virtual plant based on Open L-System. This platform implements the basic functions of L-Studio, and covers the shortage of L-Studio that can't visualize the plant organs effectively by introducing the organ library.④Discuss anothor growth modeling method -- virtual organ and bring it to the deformation of plant organs based on L-System's metrits.⑤Give the significance of the study and the future work at last.
