In recent years, Internet develops rapidly. With the development of the next generation network(NGN), the communication faces many challenges from television network, and Internet. Network convergence is becoming the goal of internet development. The Vo IP technology, which is generated in the condition of opportunity and challenge coexist. Vo IP can promote rap id development in voice, video and multimedia data with its characteristics of convenient, fast and strong expansibility. As an open source software platform, the Asterisk system can inplement almost all functions of PBX, and it can provide comprehensive technical application and telecommunication function. It can exchange a computer to different kind of switch and can customize services for users themselves.This work focuses on the principle of Vo IP and the application of Asterisk. Firstly, the principle and characteristics of the protocols in Vo IP have been analyzed. Based on the business usage of these protocols, the advantages and disadvantages of the protocols have been investigated and the characteristics of commucation and internet industy have been comprehended. The business model and the development direction of of Vo IP technology have been analyzed based on the research. Then, a softswitch system on the linux platform by using Asterisk software has been established. The design philosophy of Asterisk has been studied by analyzing the basic structure and internal code. Based on the research, not only the implementation models of Vo IP protocol and PSTN network have been well understood, but also the protocols of communication and voice over Internet. Next, an Asterisk system has been established, and thus, the research content can be tested and practiced. In the end, the existing problems and future direction are summarized, especially for the support of SIP protocol and further development of the system to make Vo IP technology more responsive for the needs of the practical application...
