With the rapid development of science and technology, the computer occupies an irreplaceable position in the areas of people’s life, learning and working. For the past many years, many application developers used the method of self-coding before the advent of the traditional Mongolian international standard of Unicode code, resulting in many problems as coding inconsistencies between various applications. All these make the development of traditional Mongolian information processing encounter some obstacles and these related applications have suffered a great challenge of development. Up to now, there have been only a handful products can provide support for the traditional Mongolian language, which forms a strong contrast with the rapid development of information industry.Since the advent of the Linux operating system, it has been loved and researched by the programs lovers because of its strong core, conserving resources, features and feature of open-source. Even so, compared with earlier Windows operating system, due to Linux operating system was short of good graphical environment, it has led to the majority of users who have accustomed to using Windows operating system with beautiful and convenient desktop environment. Today, Linux operating system has a desktop-oriented version. At the same time, some traditional Mongolian input methods with the input method protocols of Linux operating system like XIM, IIIMF and SCIM have been designed. However, as a new generation of input method, IBUS still leaves a large gap in the research and development of traditional Mongolian input method, which is also an important reason for this paper to chose IBUS as the foundation of development. The paper uses the Linux operating system, internationalization and localization mechanisms to research the language locale environmental when applications are running, and the features of traditional Mongolian language in the platform of Linux IBUS. By drawing on experience in the development of traditional Mongolian input method, this paper has finished developing the traditional Mongolian input method (MengDY) on Linux and IBUS. This input method is with a simple interface and consistent with the user’s habits. This paper includes six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, gives a brief overview of the research background, significance of the topic, writing innovation and the organizational structure. The second chapter surveys the status of traditional Mongolian information processing, analyzes the traditional Mongolian own characteristics, studies the internationalization and localization of operating systems, and explores the existing operating systems of Windows and Linux family for traditional Mongolian language support. The third chapter studies coding standard and font technology of traditional Mongolian to display correctly, highlights the OpenType font technology. The fourth chapter is proposed based on the overall design of traditional Mongolian input method (MengDY) on Linux and IBUS, studies the Linux operating system and input layout engine. Chapter five describes the design and implementation of MengDY input method, includes locale design, interface of input method engine, installation of IBUS code table file and OpenType font file, then shows the installation process and use of the MengDY input method. Chapter six makes a summary and makes prospect of improving MengDY input method.
