Examples of Doubtful Points in Ancient Books(hereinafter referred to as the Book) by Yu Yue(a renowned scholar in the field of economy and ancient writing in late Qing Dynasty) covers a wide area of writing, phonology, grammar, rhetorics, vocabulary, emendation, punctuation, syntactics and discourse all of which constitutes critical interpretation of words in ancient books. Scholars in the field of collation of ancient books classify the content of the Book into compilation and editing scattering documents and manuscripts, emendation, punctuation, annotation, modern-language version, and appendix of ancient books. In this respect, the Book has profound impact on review and research of ancient books. The thesis aims to explore the methods of reviewing ancient books from the perspective of gloss based on the analysis of examples in the Book. The four tentative methods are as follows: reviewing ancient books by means of emendating inaccurate and redundant expressions; reviewing ancient books by means of analyzing reasons such as lacking knowledge in ancient writing and pronunciation for wrong annotation; reviewing ancient books by means of analyzing reasons such as misinterpretation of names for people and books for improper use of punctuation; reviewing ancient books by means of translation in aspects of semantics, grammar and rhetorics. In addition, rules of annotation and emendation summarized in the Book can offer reference for further collation of ancient books.
