With the rapid development of the wireless communications, radar, electronic warfare, weapon guidance system and so on, the solid state power amplifier as one of the key components has got more and more attention, and it has a series of advantages such as long service life, good reliability and low operation voltage. However, due to factors such as semiconductor materials and manufacturing process, along with the development requirements of high performance and low energy consumption of modern system, the development needs of solid state power amplifier is increasingly urgent. So the study of efficient solid state power amplifier is of great importance, and class E power amplifier is one of the typical. The purpose of this paper is doing research of the class E power amplifier and exploring its operating characteristics, to find a circuit scheme of high efficiency output. The peak current and peak voltage of Class E power amplifier do not occur at the same time, so the device is similar to a "switch" with the characteristics of the lowest power consumption and theoretical efficiency of 100%. The basic principle and design method of class E power amplifiers were described in detail in this thesis. This paper uses method of theoretical analysis combining with electromagnetic simulation, and uses new semiconductor material and technology, to design a class E power amplifier of S-band transmission line. And at the same time gives detailed analysis and explanations to the relevance theory of class E power amplifier and the key technique used in this paper. The design process mainly includes overall scheme design and device selection, simulation of quiescent operating point, design of bias circuit stability analysis, load pull technique, harmonic suppression matching network design, layout joint simulation and so on. Design of matching network:is particularly important to the power amplifier. After considering, this paper uses mixed design method of combining microstrip line with lumped parameter. At last, a power amplifier is made according to the results of the optimized design, the debug and test have been done and gives the relevant test results. The test results show that the class E power amplifier works in the 2.8GHz frequency, when the input power equals to 26 dBm, the gain is more than 13dB and power-added efficiency (PAE) reaches more than 60%. The test results can meet the needs of the design requirements and have certain value in engineering project.
