A great part of the reading materials of the newspapers and magazines in late Qing dynasty are preserved in the scholars’ diaries and correspondence. Those scholars’ spiritual condition and transformation through social upheavals are vividly and honestly recorded in their diary.This article attempts to take Wang Lushan Diary by late Qing dynasty scholar Sun Baoxuan and Shi Futang Diary by Pi Xirui as texts and combine the remaining collected works, literary works and related history works as subjects of study to pry into the late Qing dynasty scholars’ reading condition of newspapers by trying to combine Sun Baoxuan and Pixirui’s reading practices of newspapers.There are 6 chapters in this paper. Firstly, through the study of Wang Lushan Diary and Shi Futang Diary, the reading context of the two can be teased out that where can they read newspapers, the kinds of newspapers they read and how they read. Next, analyze how the late Qing dynasty scholars convert newspaper from a fangle poorly known to a reading material almost touched everyday and how to change reading newspapers from a poorly seen thing into a daily activity and at last a reading habit. Then discuss the reading structure conversion from ancient books and records to a new type of reading material of late Qing dynasty and the influence of this change to their thoughts. Finally, taking the behavior that Pi Xirui following Shen Newspaper focuses on the Sino-Japanese war as a case, mainly talk about that how Pi focuses on, discusses and participates in the whole war and how he participates in the politics through mimicry environment provided by newspapers in the wars news net knitted by Shen Newspapers.
