Complex product refers complex needs, complex product composition and complex design technology. The design and development of complex product is a process of knowledge inheritance and reuse. The design process involve knowledge of product design process, components, design process parameters, product instances and instances properties, and design knowledge always hidden in scientific principles, technical standards, product instances, product components design parameters, experiential knowledge among experts In the product design process, designers need fast and accurate access to relevant design knowledge, therefore, the effective management of design knowledge and access becomes more important.Ontology as the concept of the world’s explicit instructions, not only can be expressed as the concept of information classification system, but also describes the semantic relationship between the information, as a carrier of knowledge and information, computer can easily manage the information so as to realize the reuse of information and meet knowledge needs of designers.This paper describes the background and significance of the research, aiming to emphasize the importance of ontology research.
