Known as "living fossils", the ancient and famous trees have important ecological, economic and social value. Due to the sharp deterioration of the ecological environment and many other reasons for instant success, the ancient and famous trees are stolen, burned and destroyed frequently. This paper presents that the emerging technology—Internet of Things (IOT)—should be introduced to the ancient and famous trees’monitoring and management. It researches the ancient and famous trees’monitoring and management based on the IOT, and also proposes an effective solution. By deploying 433MHz active RFID and ZigBee wireless temperature and humidity sensors on the ancient and famous trees, it realizes the real-time monitoring of ancient and famous trees and their values of temperature and humidity. Visual C # language and SQL Server 2008 database have been used to develop the system of the ancient and famous trees’monitoring and management based on the IOT on the Microsoft.NET development environment. The system has realized the intelligent storage of ancient and famous trees’ information, real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity on the living environment of the ancient and famous trees, real-time alarming when the ancient and famous trees have been illegally transplanted. This article has also provided a new approach to monitoring and managing the rare forest resources.The ancient and famous trees are mostly distributed in the wild. It is not easy to replace the batteries, so the system has been greatly restricted by energies. Combined with the actual application characteristics of the system for monitoring and managing the ancient and famous trees, the ZigBee routing algorithm used in the system has been improved from the view of maximizing network’s lifetime. Using the characteristic of data transmitting in a fixed direction in the system, it controls the transmission direction of the RREQ packets to reduce the unnecessary RREQ packets and decrease the losses of node energy caused by RREQ’s flooding. According to dividing the node into different energy regions, it makes the node’s energy can be used in balanced and avoids node in low energy is excessively used to prolong the network’s survival time. The simulation results using NS-2 show that the number of RREQ packets in the network has been significantly reduced and the rate of node survival has been increased. It effectively guarantees the monitoring range of the system, and also provides a reference for the related research.
