The Research Of The Media Presentation Of Anti-domestic Violence

In recent years, a series of shocking events of domestic violence are reported by the media. The victims have long suffered great pains that beyond our imagination, some of them choose "meeting violence with violence" when there is no other choice, innumerable families are disintegrated for this reason. People start to think what measures should be taken to prevent and stop this kind of tragedies from happening again. All of the social sectors have gradually paid much more attention to the domestic violence, the media is playing a vital role during the process. On one hand, the media help the public to form an objective and correct understanding of domestic violence by delivering information; on the other hand, the media guide public opinion in society by news comments. Therefore, the study of how the media present the issue of anti-domestic violence, and put forward some reasonable suggestions, it is meaningful and helpful for the media to play a bigger role in the process of eliminating domestic violence."Content analysis" was used as main reaserch method in this study. This paper collected the four newspapers’ reports, People’s Daily, China Women’s News Daily, Legal Daily, Beijing Youth Daily, about the anti-domestic violence from 2002 to 2014, then analyzed the data. On the basis of a large amount of data and reference material, this paper summarized the general presentation of anti-domestic violence in China, paid attention to the diachronic and synchronic aspects, explored the evolution of the reports and concluded the characteristics of each newspaper. Futhermore, the paper discussed how to improve the reports of anti-domestic violence. This study can be mainly divided into five parts:The first part is an introduction. Introduced the origin and reaserch significance of this study, then defined the concept of domestic violence, collected and summarized the related research. In addition, put forward the overall design of this study, selected the samples, put forward the questions, sorted out the thoughts, introduced the research method, found out the limitations of this study, and explained the categories.The second part is the statistics and analysis. Analysis method was mainly used in this part. This part was carried out in nine categories:the reports quantity, reports quantity tends over time, the distribution of months, the report content, orientation of the attitude, news sources, genre, format, layout and length. Each category was developed into three aspects:the first one was an investigation of all 553 reports, in order to conclude the general media presentation of this issue; the second one was the summary of the changes of the reports during the years; thirdly, it compared the differences between these four newspapers. In general, this part is consist of data and diagrams which are seen as steppingstones for the following parts.The third part is about the media participation in the process of the legalization. It can be concluded that the media is playing a dual role,"recorder" and "participant". The paper concluded the changes of the reports of anti-domestic violence from two different aspects:quantity and text content. After conducting a deep research, it can be concluded that the key words of the reports are continually changing, the key words of the reports are "popularization" and "reflection" at early age, "appeal" and "action" in the interim, "interpretation" and "discussion" at the present stage.The fourth part is the summary of the characteristics of anti-domestic violence reports. Generally, the reports are not evenly distributed, and they vary greatly; most of the reports show the neutral position, but there is a lot of negative emotion behind the words; authoritative sources occupy the absolute superiority, non-authoritative sources are few in numbers, and it shows an extreme imbalance; some of the reports are written in simplified idioms, and the depth of the reports remains to be strengthen; the reports of an-ti domestic violence have a low utilization rate of images, by contrast, they are in the context of the era of picture-reading. Four newspapers present different characteristics:People’s Daily pays attention to promoting the legal policy from a macroscopic perspective, and adheres to positive propaganda; as a relative on women’s mother’s side, China Women’s News Daily prefers to think and solve problems from the female perspective; Legal Daily presents the issue from the perspective of the professional legal interpretation, although it adds the form of cartoons to the reports to make them lively, but it is still difficult to cover its problem of "hard-understanding"; Beijing Youth Daily’s reports of anti-domestic violence have a tendency of "entertainment".The fifth part is putting forward some feasible suggestions from three different aspects:concepts, reporting mechanism, and operation service. The journalists should build an awareness of gender equality, stick to the principle of professional ethics, strengthen their knowledge of specialty law; the media should set up a pattern of daily report for anti-domestic violence; the journalists should balance the speaking right between authoritative sources and non-authoritative sources, enrich the report content and the format, deepen the reporting, and strengthen the function of news comments. Through the optimization of anti-domestic violence issues, the media will further play its positive role in the process of eliminating domestic violence, so as to promote the harmonious development of the family and the whole society.
