Research On The Public Opinion About Jit Shin Pau

Overseas Chinese newspaper, which plays a supplementary role in researches on Chinese journalism history, is important component of Chinese newspaper industry. It is of great value in learning about the basic state of overseas ethnic Chinese, the spreading of Chinese language and the situation of public news opinions. Based on the fundamental theory of Chinese journalism history, this thesis takes the comments of Jit Shin Pau in Singapore as the research text and focuses on the analysis of involved comments in order to reveal the guidance of public opinions, and the influence on ethnic Chinese of this newspaper in Singapore.The first part introduces the basic profile from the aspects of research status, research methods and research contents. Starting with the history of Singapore, the second part analyzes the origin of "Lat" and "Singapura", in order to make a research on the situation of newspaper industry in Singapore from the end of the 19th century to 1910s, including "Lat Pou", "Jit Shin Pau", "Thien Nan Shin Pau", "Shing Pao", and corrects the existing mistakes in the study, meanwhile, supplies the study data of Singapore Chinese-language newspapers.The third part focuses on Jit Shin Pau, includes its publication, column setting and layout, principles and standpoint, characteristics of news and advertisements. The fourth part in the comment section of the newspaper mainly involves three editors, Liaozi Tian, Lim Boon Keng and Henry Wong Nai Siong. Because of the different scholarship qualities, news commentary concerns of them are always not the same. Based on this, Jit Shin Pau forms a kind of unique public opinion.Meanwhile, It discusses Jit Shin Pau’s standpoint of public opinions on the "Yihetuan Movement", "Gengzi Event of Prince Qin " and "Constitutional Reform and Modernization ".The fifth part introduces characteristics and orientation of public opinion about Jit Shin Pau, contains characteristics of language and literary form. At last, this section introuduce the propagation effect about the public opinion.The sixth chapter based on the cultural identity theory, which comes from the multiple effects of people’s faith, emotion and behavior loyalty to the specific geographical location, analyses the reasons on the Jit Shin Pau to form a unique system of public opinion. Because of the different identity of editors, Jit Shin Pau forms the special comment characteristics and media style.
