“News extortion” hides in the operation of the news media with diverse ways and changeable patterns, which has serious negative effects on society, individual and the media. After the exposition of the “Chen Yong zhou incident” in October, 2013 and the“twenty-first Century news extortion case”in September 2014, “news extortion” begins to appear in public and gradually becomes the researching topic of news media scholars and the key managing object of the department of news media. Since the launching of the specific action on combating news extortion and false news by the Central Propaganda Department in 2013, there are 216 illegal newspapers under investigation, 49 reporters station and 14455 reporter station are cancelled because of the involvement of “news extortion” and other irregularities. The large number involved and the powerful investigation which has never seen before are enough to prove that news extortion phenomenon has reached serious degree in China. “News extortion” has various forms and new characteristics and it is different from the similar “paid news” which is investigated before. Firstly, by using the method of case analysis and literature research assisted with the combination with a large number of news extortion case and theory, this paper differentiates and analyses the concept of “news extortion”, and then makes a clear definition of different “news extortion”. Secondly, this paper describes the formation conditions and new features of “news extortion”. What’s more, the development of news extortion in the history of china is also mentioned. Thirdly, the author analyzes the type and forms of “news extortion” combined with typical case analysis on news extortion, Fourthly, in this paper, the author reveals the multi hierarchy problems of society, media and media workers behind the “news extortion”, pointing out the harm of news extortion to the society, the media and the public. Fifthly, the countermeasures on news extortion are put forward. Finally, the author gives an overview of the current results of the governance on news extortion.
