In recent years, female reading has become a focus of attention for various publishing companies in China. The female-reader-tailored publications sell so well that they continuously occupy the major bestseller lists. While the national reading rate continues to decline, the female reading rate remains soaring. Female publishing has even become a savior to Chinese publishing industry, from books for women sold millions of copies, to billions at the box office earned from films and TV dramas adapted from female novels.But it is undeniable that there are always shadows under a halo.With its thriving development, female books are exposed to problems like plagiarism, lack of depth, singleness of the medium the underdevelopment of the industry chain. It is urgent for the publishing industry and academic circles to tackle the problems facing China’s female publishing and to guide female books onto a healthier and more dynamic path. On the other hand, the rapid development of Internet technology has brought female publishing unprecedented opportunities and challenges. The imminent problems are how to establish female brands and how to form a female book copyright industry chain against the background of the convergence of the old and new media.Some scholars and experts in domestic and foreign publishing industry and the academic circles have already studied the above-mentioned problems; however, because of the short history of female books which have not yet been officially recognized by "Classification of China Books", there is still a shortage of research efforts Based on existing research results and analysis on massive data and materials, this paper applies theories of consumer publishing science, psychology, sociology, marketing and communication science into research, while analyzing the female readers’psychology and demand, the historical development of female reading and the current situation and causation of China’s female publishing. This paper also makes feasible propositions to tackle the problems exposed in female publishing, and tries to provide some reference for the further development of the female publishing in China and for expanding its influence around the world.This paper is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction which gives the definition of female books and explains the research background, research methods and contents, and possible innovation points. The second part mainly describes the current situation of female book publishing, beginning from the maturation and prosperity of female reading to analyzing the specific status of the female books. The third part provides an in-depth analysis on the existing problems of female publishing in China and tries to probe into various reasons leading to these problems. The last part attempts to make practical propositions by combining theory and practice and by by applying related knowledge in publishing science, psychology, marketing, communication, Internet thinking and so on.
