Stereoscopic three-dimensional (S3D) animation, combining traditional3D animation and stereoscopic display technology, has been widely used in film, advertising, game and other fields. During the production of S3D animation, the main problem is to control3D effect. One of the main factors affecting3D effect is adjusting the stereo camera parameters. At present, the manual method is commonly exploited to control stereo camera, which increases the production costs of S3D animation. Thus, this thesis presents an intelligent method to control the stereo camera parameters automatically, while acquires even exceeds the effect of manual method. We first introduce the stereoscopic display principle based on binocular disparity and stereo camera models. Then, we discuss three problems affecting the3D effect:vergence-accommodation (VA) conflict, stereoscopic window violation (SWV), and perceived depth jump. Based on these factors we analyze the drawback of the existing methods for controlling stereo camera parameters, and propose an optimization method. This method introduces attention tracking while calculating the zero parallax by considering both SWV and perceived depth jump. Moreover, we calculate the inter-axial separation by using the3D comfort zone and perceived depth mapping. Our proposed method is implemented as the form of Maya plug-in. We further use professional S3D animation scenes to test its effect. The result shows that our intelligent method can achieve better3D effect.
