With the rapid development of wireless telecommunication system, more spectrum resources are required for various services. For the spectrum resources are becoming more and more scarcely, the technology that increases the spectrum efficiency is needed to support the development of wireless telecommunication system. Under the circumstances, people are putting more emphasis on D2D communication, for D2D communication can effectively increase the spectrum efficiency. And meanwhile D2D communication will be applied in more and more scenarios. So from last year,3GPP organization has merged D2D communication into LTE-Advanced and discussed about its use cases and service requirements.3GPP has named D2D communication as Proximity-based Service.This article mainly focuses on ProSe system architecture and signaling procedures. Firstly this article begins with LTE architecture and signaling procedures. It introduces the main entities and reference points. And it illustrates some high-level signaling procedures such as attach procedure, tracking area update procedure and handover procedure. Then it introduces the ProSe use cases and summarizes some approved proposals discussed on3GPP SA2meetings. The proposals proposed ProSe architecture and signaling procedures. Firstly it ascertains the architecture for Proximity services and this architecture is modified according to the LTE architecture. Then it introduces the signaling procedures including service authorization procedure and direct discovery procedure. Finally the proposals introduced how ProSe will impact the existing signaling procedures.The main innovation of this article is to propose ProSe system architecture and ProSe signaling procedures based on the ProSe system architecture. This article firstly proposes ProSe system architecture. It adds a new entity to deal with the related IDs and procedures on the basis of LTE system architecture. Also this architecture adds PC5interface which enables two UEs in proximity to communicate with each other directly. Then new ProSe identifiers are proposed and they enable the entities to identify and manage the ProSe enabled UEs. At last it proposes the related ProSe signaling procedures. The first one is ProSe registration procedure which authorises UEs and apps to perform related ProSe services.The second one is direct discovery procedure which includes two solutions. They are UE triggered direct discovery procedure and network triggered direct discovery procedure respectively. The latter one makes the network manage ProSe discovery more effectively. The last one is mobility management procedure according to the network capability. This procedure can save the signaling costs. All the solutions have been discussed on3GPP meetings and then approved.
