Proximity Communication is a new innovative inter-chip communication technology, aims to let one chip transmit signals directly to another next to it via capacitive coupling, instead of through the tangle of pins, wires and circuit boards employed today. Further more, it has the advantage of high-speed, high bandwidth, low power and enhanced testing capability. The technique will have great value to wafer scale integrated and greatly alter many aspects of computer design. This paper studied the theory of Proximity Communication, and designed two interface circuits which can be used in Proximity Communication. This paper also designed and researched other key technique such as electronic alignment, layout design, packaging structure and test technique for Proximity Communication. The main works in this paper are as follows:1. It studied the theory of Proximity Communication and its relative theory, such as coupling capacitance, capacitive crosstalk etc. It also optimized the coupling capacitance calculating model and calculated the capacitance in the design.2. It designed two Proximity Communication Interface circuit in 0.18um CMOS process. The layout simulation realized that they can operate at 2 GHz and have low power; the average power is below 3mW/pin. They can be used in Proximity Communication very well.3. It studied the misalignments of chips in Proximity Communication and designed a series of methods to align the chips. The alignment may be formed by a geographic feature, making a vernier measurement and adding electronic alignment logic for Proximity Communication.4. It studied and designed several packaging structure in 3D Multi-Chip Module technique, which may be used in Proximity Communication. It also designed and researched the testing technique for Proximity Communication, which can be tested in function and performance.
