With the development of the technology and the broad application in the wireless multi-hop network, the study of wireless multi-hop network is caused wide attention by the many scholars. The routing becomes the most important hot in the wireless multi-hop network. The paper started with the characteristic of the wireless multi-hop network. Through the research of the traditional routing protocols, we found that there were a lot of the problems. Most of the traditional routing protocols are not suitable for wireless communication environment because they are from the evolution mechanism of cable. The opportunistic routing emerged as the times require for solving these problems. Compared with the traditional wireless routing algorithm, the opportunistic routing can make full use of the characteristic of the wireless channel, which largely improves the performance of the wireless multi-hop network. The paper introduced some typical opportunistic routing protocols and described their merit and demerit in detail. We also introduced the characteristic and application environment of the opportunistic routing and the several factors affecting its performance. However, there are some problems demanding prompt solution in the opportunistic routing, such as the selection and coordination of candidates and the redundant data packets, the fairness of energy utilization. Moreover, through the platform of Linux, we test AEUOR and compare it with ExOR in NS2.34. Compared with the ExOR, the lifetime of network with AEUOR increased by30%the delivery of the data and delay had significant performance improvement. The least but least, we explored the future of the opportunistic routing, which can provide the reference for the development of this field.
