Referencing the data grid idea, a web-based data platform for disaster and environmental background of glacier and frozen soil was established, based on all kinds of survey and monitoring ice, snow and permafrost data and ecological and socioeconomic data in cold and arid region of China, adhering to glacier data observation and management specification and frozen soil data observation and management specification. Except for the integration of related ice, snow, frozen soil, ecological and socioeconomic data, corresponding hydrologic models adapting cold region were also gathered, and techniques like database management, metadata management, model management and online model execution were adopted to establish a preliminary resource and environmental data platform and online model application environment under the support of the platform.In the platform, data was classified into different datasets according to subjects, thematic applications or models, and one dataset was treated as the minimum data management unit. Via the creation of data dictionary, data metadata, model metadata, data classification code, dataset code, metadata code, system metadata code, and user code, the associations between data and dataset, metadata and dataset, model and dataset, and model and metadata were realized. The rational data and irrational data association techniques, small data packets and huge chunks of data uploading techniques and dataset and table annotation management techniques were employed to ensure efficient data management. In addition, through the use of metadata, coding system and system metadata mentioned above, data permanent preservation consistency and disc consistency for data permanent preservation were ensured.Considering requires of online data analysis and online model application, the open source software Jfreechat and Geonetwok were used, and the wavelet model, the Markov model and over twenty hydrologic models and corresponding model metadata were integrated into the platform, which formed the online data analysis tools and model application resources. And a case study of the Yellow River runoff variation trend analysis was made using the platform online wavelet model. What’s more, templates for online Markov model application were provided. Based on the preliminarily established platform, through extracting, processing, integrating and mosaicking base data, the snow and ice datasets, permafrost environment datasets, ecological datasets, hydrology and water resources datasets, socioeconomic datasets, climate datasets and remote sensing datasets in the ice, snow and frozen soil regions were produced. Especially, the platform providing datasets for Qinghai-Tibet railway project and Sino-Russian crude oil pipeline project from Mohe to Daqing. The key model driving data products made in the platform are important base data serving scientific research in ice, snow and frozen soil region, major construction project and sustained economic development. Above all, the platform provides an e-science demonstration in geoscience based on data, model, computation and visualization, and settles a good foundation for subsequent e-science research in cold alpine environment.
