With the improvement of living standards and the popularity of digital technology, people are increasingly interested in family informatization. Information center for household is a platform which is integrated with security function, information sharing and other features and designed to meet the demand for family informatization. After years of development, technology matures and is used more widely. But there is still a lack of versatile and low-power family information center system. So it’s urgent to develop an information center for household based on embedded technology.In this paper, an information center based on embedded system is implemented. At first, the paper analyzes the necessity to develop a high-performance low-power information center, introduces the implementation of the principle of embedded systems and other related technologies. On this basis, the information center is designed and implemented. The system consists of two parts, one is an embedded development board with variety of functional modules, the other is the control software on PC. The main features designed are real-time video monitoring, video on command, file sharing, VoIP based on Linphone. With those features, more needs of modern family are met.S3C6410based development board is used as the hardware platform and embedded Linux is used as the operating system in the information center. HLS(Http Live Streaming) is used in the implementation of video monitoring, which can adapt the bit rate according to network condition. This means basic monitoring function works even in bad network conditions. In the implementation of video on demand, Nginx is used, which is a light-weighted web server software, supports video feature. Nginx usually runs on x86platform, so it is modified to be ported to embedded. The remote control software is developed in C#, which integrates all the features and has a friendly user interface.Through detailed software and hardware design, a demo of the information center for household is implemented. The goal of the project is achieved and the plan to improve and polish the system is proposed at the end of the paper.
