Wireless multimedia sensor networks are often used for the field of traffic monitoring, smart home, target tracking and so on. Therefore, the study and implementation of WMSNs is of important theoretical and practical significance. In this paper, the characteristics and system architecture of WMSNs are analyzed. Then according to the functional requirements, we designed the hardware and software platform of WMSNs based on Xscale processor and embedded Linux operating system, as a basis for the implementation of the audio capture, transport and topology management program. WMSN test bed has eight nodes. The first thing is to build WMSN test bed, including the establishment of system development environment, creating multimedia sensor nodes, and the relevant configuration. Based on the above work, we designed and implemented audio capture based on ALSA and the real-time audio transmission based on RTP/RTCP protocols.Topology management contains two parts:master and slave nodes. We implement the background program by the C programming language, where slave nodes only needs a simple function of sending and receiving data, while the master node needs to implement routing acquiring and processing, and the communication between two slave nodes and other functions. Finally, after the construction of the WMSN test bed with eight nodes, we tested the audio capture and transmission procedure, topology management program. The results show the feasibility of audio program and topology management.
