Discontinuous reception mechanism (DRX) is one of the most important powersaving techniques in LTE-A networks, concerned widely by researchers. The power consumption of user equipment is a challenge, especially in the mobile Internet era. Thus it is worth exploring the effective powersaving methods to keep a compromise between power saving and user experience. The research is supported by Business Cooperation Projec 《Research on Enhancements for Diverse Data Applications in LTE networks》The paper mainly focuses on the the modeling methods of DRX mechanism in different scenarios. Based on the proposed models, the performance of DRX mechanism is analysed. Besides, improvements of the DRX mechanism are proposed, which have been proven effective by the simulation results.Firstly, the paper investigates the DRX mechanism when user is in RRC (Radio Resource Control) connection mode. Then a Markov model is proposed combined with the characteristics of web traffic. The performance of power saving and user experience with various DRX parameters is analysed. Besideds, a more flexible DRX mechanism has been put forward which can achieve a compromise between power consumption and delay in a wider range.Secondly, the paper researches the paging DRX mechanism with M2M (Machine to Machine) traffic. A Markov model is presented to analyze the performance of power saving and access delay with various parameters of DRX paging block periodicity and RRC release timer. Furthermore, an adaptive RRC release timer is designed, which can improve the power consumption efficiency when the average interval between two packets is long. The results have been verified by the simulation.
