With the rapid development of the communications industry, how to build a greencommunication with energy conservation, environmental protection and sustainabledevelopment has become one of the significant issues to be addressed urgently in today’ssociety. As a dominant wireline communication technology for LANs, Ethernet hasattracted widespread attention. In this paper, the energy saving strategies of Ethernet areimproved, the performance is evaluated and optimized by constructing mathematicalmodels.Firstly, in order to decrease the system loads generated by the frequent switchesbetween the sleep state and the awake state, and to improve the user’s responseperformance, on the basis of the IEEE802.3az EEE, an energy saving strategy with delaysleep and burst transmission is proposed; Based on the energy saving strategy with singlethreshold and variable transmission rate by introducing the concept of dual threshold andthe mechanism of sleep-awake, an energy saving strategy with sleep mechanism and dualthreshold variable transmission rate is proposed.Secondly, for the energy saving strategy with a delay sleep and burst transmission, aqueueing model with delay vacation and (N,T) mixed strategy is established; According tothe energy saving strategy with single threshold and variable transmission rate, a queueingmodel with single threshold and adaptive service rate is built; For the energy savingstrategy with sleep mechanism and dual threshold variable transmission rate, a queuingmodel with multiple vacation and dual threshold adaptive service rate is built. By usingthe methods of the embedded Markov chain and the matrix geometric solution, the systemmodels are analyzed in steady state. Finally, based on different energy saving strategies of Ethernet, the formulas for thesystem performance measures in terms of the energy saving ratio and average latency ofpackets are given. With numerical experiments and system simulations, the effectivenessof the improved energy saving strategies is verified. The influences of the systemparameters, such as sleep delay timer, sleep timer, sleep counter, speed switching threshold and lower transmission rate, on the system performance are mathematically evaluated. Moreover, the trade-offs between different performance measures are investigated, and theenergy saving strategies of Ethernet are optimized.
