Noise pollution has become a worldwide problem, which directly interfere with humans’ daily life, work and study, and profoundly impact on our health as well. To this end, a variety of noise pollution monitoring systems have been devised and established to attempt to gain detailed information on the noise pollution and to control or reduce it.Traditional noise monitoring systems mainly use the wired network connection, combined with deployment at specified monitoring points. Due to the high deployment and maintenance costs, there exits difficulties to send data to users as timely, effectively and reliably. This paper presents a noise monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks, which is capable of effectively enhancing the detection quality and reducing the deployment and maintenance costs.The main components of work are as follows:1. Designed a noise monitoring system based on wireless sensor network with virtues as wide-range, all-weather, real-time monitoring and multiple access methods etc.2. Proposed an optimization algorithm of the deployment of the sensor nodes position based on the weight of monitoring areas. The omnet++simulation verification was further applied to ensure that our methods of deployment would be applied with satisfaction and fit in different areas of the city, and would also obtain higher effective values of deployment.3. Proposed an improved routing protocol which was dedicated to the monitoring system, to thus extend the network lifetime through analysis on the energy of nodes.
