Error correction coding is an essential part for reliable informationtransmission in communication systems. As one kind of the maximumdistance separable code,RS (Reed-Solomon) code has been widely used indigital communication systems, which can not only correct random errors butalso correct burst errors. RS code has the advantage of high speed, short timedelay and regular structure, therefore how to apply RS code to current digitalcommunication systems is a research hot spot in communication systemapplication. In this paper, according to the design of the rendezvous anddocking microwave radar in the manned space engineering, a digitalcommunication link module containing a RS encoding and decoding unit isimplemented based on FPGA. The designed link module consists of atransceiver control unit, a RS encoding control unit, a transmit dual ram unit, aRS encoding unit, a parallel to serial conversion unit, a frame synchronize unit,a RS decoding control unit, a receiver dual ram unit, a RS decoding unit andan asynchronous serial transmission unit. The function of each unit in themodule has been verified by simulations using Matlab and Modelsim, and thedesigned hardware has also been tested. The simulation and test results showthat all the expected functions are accomplished in the designed system.
