Stripping fiber coating technology has an indispensable role in the practicalapplication, which is widely used in the welding technology, optical devices and thefabrication of the optical fiber sensors. For example, the FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating)prepared by UV(ultraviolet) exposure, it is usually necessary to remove the fibercoating to ensure the UV fully into the fiber cladding without suffering absorptionloss. Rapid advance in fiber processing has driven the stripping fiber coating methodbecoming increasingly demanding, so much more attention has been attracted for thestripping fiber coating research.The commonly methods are manual stripping, automatic stripping and chemicalstripping methods, while these methods all have their own drawbacks and can’t meetthe needs of fiber optic technology. Such as manual stripping method is easy todamage the fiber, bad consistency and difficult to precisely control the strip length;automatic stripping can precisely control the length, but it is hard to avoid the bladedamage for fiber, the complex operation and high equipment maintenance frequency;chemical stripping method is likely to cause environmental pollution and a certaindegree of risk, and the minimum stripping length is limited.As a new method, laser stripping fiber coating is different from previousmethods. It can be quickly and accurately strip middle coating layer withnon-contacting. Theoretically, laser stripping has no damage to optical fiber. This isvery beneficial in FBG production process. In addition, the laser stripping method canalso provide a basis for the automated production of FBG. However, the current laserstripping method is immature and has not widely applied in practice, and the study oflaser stripping method has also become a hot topic in recent years. This paper studiesthat using a9.3μm CO2laser strip four kinds of optical fiber coating, and detect thequality of the coating stripped fiber. In this paper, software was used to simulationanalysis the process of CO2laser stripping fiber coating, parameters of completelystripping the fiber coating was calculated and experimentally verified. Meanwhile,according to the demand for inscribing FBG, detailed analysis was made for the effect of inscribing grating on the three kinds of coating stripped fiber. The main contentsinclude the following aspects:(1)It introduces the traditional fiber coating stripping methods and thedevelopment situation of laser stripping fiber coating.(2)It reviews the fiber structure and classification. The principles andcharacteristics of using CO2laser to strip the fiber coating were analyzed.(3)It presents a CO2laser stripping fiber coating program based on therequirements of the continuous FBG array fabrication system, describes the deviceand studies the feasibility of the program.(4)The CO2laser was used to strip the coating on a fixed point of the fiber.According to the data of the experiment, Matlab was utilized to calculate theparameters of completely stripping the fiber coating with a laser mirror and put it intopractice. The experimental results showed that this method can completely strip alength of fiber coating successfully. In the end, further examinations were done to testthe fiber properties.(5)The excimer laser was utilized to inscribe FBG on the three types of coatingstripped fiber, and the reflection spectrum of the FBG was detected. The feasibility ofinscribing FBG on the fiber stripped by CO2laser was analyzed, which is comparedwith the manual stripping.
