Recent years, the blue phase liquid crystal displays(BPLCDs) attracted more and moreresearchers’ attention because of its revolutionary features, such as simple fabrication, highcontrast, wide viewing angle and fast response time. However, the problems of highoperating voltage and low transmittance become two bottlenecks of blue phase liquidcrystal displays before commercial production. Through the electrode structure design, highoperating voltage problem has been solved, but the low transmittance problem still exists. In this paper, in order to improve the transmittance of BPLCD, we put forward severalBPLCDs with new electrode structure. In the first chapter, the structure characteristics and working principle of blue phaseliquid crystal and preparation process of polymer stability blue phase liquid crystal arestated in detail. By summarizing the performance of the liquid crystal display, the bluephase liquid crystal has great potential in display application. Two main blue phase liquidcrystal display structures are introduced, which are IPS and VFS structure, respectively.Blue phase liquid crystal also has advantages on multi-function display. In the second chapter, the simulation theoretical foundation of the blue phase liquid isgiven. By using the extended Jones matrix and Kerr effect of blue phase liquid, theelectro-optical properties can be calculated whatever direction is the light. In the third chapter, we propose a high transmittance BPLCD. In this structure, thetransmittance above the electrode is increased without influencing the transmittancebetween the electrodes, and it also keeps the wide viewing angle characteristic of theBPLCD. Because of the pixel electrode and the common electrode can regard as storagecapacitor, so aperture ratio is increased. In the fourth chapter, we propose a transflective and viewing angle controllableBPLCD. This structure shows a good transflective display and viewing angle controllabledisplay. In the TR mode, the VT and VR curve can mach each other very well, so we canuse a single gamma curve to drive. In the VRC mode, the wide viewing angle and narrowviewing angle can switch freely. In the fifth chapter, we propose a low voltage transflective blue phase liquid crystaldisplay. By using double permeating electrode or protrusion electrode on the bottomsubstrate, the operating voltage can decrease to about10V. By controlling the etching depthor protrusion height of bottom ITO electrodes and the electrodes’ width and gap of top ITOelectrode, the VT and VR curve can match very well.
