The research on Chinese Repository is largely focused on history, literature andlaw fields, and it is few seen in the field of the newspaper business and themiscellaneous of reporters. As a witness and recorder in the first Opium War, thefantastic news of Chinese Repository has posed a significant impact on thedevelopment of Chinese’s modern journalism. This paper attempts to take the opiumreports for example, exploring the feature of the opium news and the attitude on theopium issue, and also aims to pry out the turbulent political and social environment inChina from the English newspaper.Owing to the abundant information in Chinese Repository, in order to highlightthe choreography features and attitude, the opium reports in this paper are referred toall kinds of opium-related articles in the Chinese Repository which has20yearsold.The number of the opium reports in Chinese Repository is102, mainly refersto opium trades, the memorials,reviews, book reviews,related letters to the editorsand the opium prize essays about the opium issue. We can also divided them into "Journal of Occurrence "," Opium review " and" other planning articles " in thegenre. This article aims to analyze the contents of these news reports, figuring outthe details and trying to clarify the attitude and the reason on the opium problem for20years.and the paper will finally discuss the effects of the opium news from themacro level.
