Wireless Mesh Network (WMN), a kind of network transmitting signal through multiple hops wireless channel, has more advantages than traditional Wireless Networks. It combines with several advanced technologies such as multi-channel, transmission rate and NIC. With such technologies, WMN can effectively improve the Network performance. At present, most wireless data transmission technology are based on Omni-directional antenna because of its wide coverage. There is too much interference in the WMN, however, low spatial reuse while using Omni-directional antenna which restricts the performance of WMN. In order to improve the performance of WMN, Directional antenna instead of Omni-directional antenna is adopted in WMN to reduce the signal interference and improve the reusability of space. But there exists some problems in Directional antenna technology, such as the high cost of directional antenna, the mutual interference between directional beam, etc., which makes the WMN deployment based on directional antenna technology difficult.This paper mainly focuses on the problem of gateway deployment in wireless mesh backbone network, including researches of existing algorithms of the gateway deployment optimization, analysis the advantages and disadvantages of existing WMN deployment algorithm. Combining with the transmission characteristics of directional antenna, some algorithms to optimize the gateway deployment and the topology of wireless mesh backbone network are proposed in this paper. The specific work is as follows:(1) Considering the existed problems of using directional antenna, Delaunay graph is adopted as the initial topology of wireless mesh backbone network. A formalized definition algorithm is proposed in this paper to optimize the gateway deployment of wireless mesh backbone network based on directional antenna. The time complexity of the algorithm is also analyzed. The simulation and analysis shows that this algorithm has the optimized gateway location in the wireless mesh backbone network, achieving less number of gateways and shorter total hops the gateway to the other nodes;(2) Based on the gateway deployment optimization algorithm of wireless mesh backbone network, an algorithm optimizing the topology of WMN based on transmission distance (TOTD) is proposed. While network connectivity is guaranteed, the algorithm reduces wireless links that the transmission distance is too long and energy consumption is high to improve the transmission rate and reduce energy consumption of WMN; the cost of WMN deployment can be effectively reduced by limiting the number of directional antennas deployed on nodes of WMN. The simulation shows that the optimized topology can achieve the least transmission distance the gateways to other nodes, solving the problem of the interference between the directional antenna. The network performance is improved;(3) Based on TOTD, considering the relationship between network transmission distance and the node degrees, the TOTD with the gateway node degree unlimited (TOTD-GDU) is proposed which set no limit to gateway node degree while other conditions are the same as the TOTD. The TOTD-GDU can further reduce network transmission distance and transmission delay under the situation of small increase of network deployment cost or even no increase.NS2simulation results show that, under the situation of small increase of the overall costs of network deployment, TOTD-GDU algorithm can greatly reduce the network transmission distance and the network delay which makes it more conducive to be promoted.In this paper, the research provides a feasible and effective technical solution for the gateway deployment and topology optimization of wireless mesh backbone network which has a certain reference value for engineering applications.
