Wireless Mesh Network is a new networking model which emerged in recentyears. Wireless Mesh Network is a network with a wide range of applications. Thisnetwork is designed to connect with any existing network, and this connection canbe achieved through gateways. Most of the existing routing design is limited to thedomain of a single gateway, however, this thsis considers the route strategy betweenthe gateway domains, i.e. multi-gateway routing problem. This thsis develops a new Wireless Mesh Network routing protocol namedMGAODV based on topology control method. During the design process of routingprotocols, this thsis gives full consideration to the peer-to-peer character of wirelessMesh network, other network properties such as channel utilization, load-balancingare also considered. This thsis uses the idea of cross-layer design and combinesrouting design with network topology control and gateway load balancing strategy. The thsis introduces a new topology control scheme for multi-gateway wirelessMesh network first, it also expands the routing in wireless Mesh network frominside domain of the gateway to the interaction amang different domains. The thsisgives full consideration to the specific architecture named peer-to-peer in WirelesslMesh Networks, it also considers the high scalability, high fault tolerancecharacteristics of WMN, and designs an algorithm to establish the topology ofWMN, and introduces the method of the link detection, routing node registration, link control process. The thsis also gives a solution to balance network connectivityand interference rate, and gives the creative design of the connection between thegateway domains, and it also successfully designs the network structure. Then thethsis conbines the gateway topology control technology with the Gateway LoadBalancing and designs an algorithm for gateways load balance. The algorithmconsiders the transmission time between routing nodes and gateway, it also takes thenumber of nodes registered under this gateway into account, thereby it furtherreduces the mutual interference of network transmission, and enhances theperformance of network routing. In addtion, the thsis designs a routing protocol forwireless Mesh network in multi-gateway situation called MGAODV. The thsisintroduces the two threshold named node inteface and balance differencerespectively, and take full use of the available interface in each node, and inhencethe network perfomance. Finally, through the simulation in NS2, this thsis proves that the designedprotocol MGAODV based on the topology control and load balancing strategy canobtain a better performance like smaller delay, lower loss rate and higher throughput than those protocols lack of topology control or load balancing.
