With the rapid development of economy, Chinese people pay great attentio n to the quality of food and food safety. Naturally, media plays a vital role. And among various media forms, online media is not only necessary for reporting ne ws, but also, have tremendous influence on people’s life.In the October,2013, the issue of Datong edible oil caught the eyes of the media. It had the most unprecedented degree of influence and the impact spread along both Chinese mainland and Taiwan province. After this issue of emergency, media in both sides carried out a wide range of reports and online media was the most active part in reporting news and became an important information sources.Therefore, the paper aims to make a comparative study of the reports of People and China Times on Datong edible oil emergency. By using the method of quantitative analysis and content analysis, the study finds out that on the one hand, both sites share the sense of aging awareness, information awareness, truth awareness and audience-based awareness of modern news. On the other hand, People and China times’ reports are quite different in reporting methods, text sues and language style. The thesis suggests that public concern, government regulation, and network influence are the social basis of coverage convergence. The source of the differences is a result of different media environment on both sides. Hopefully, this study can provide some references to Chinese media on food safety reports.
