Rheometer is an important tool used in the exploitation of the ocean. It can detectthe rheological properties of material in real time and provide more adequatetheoretical support in the application of the material. Rheometer is an instrumentcapable of detecting fluid viscosity, stress increase, flow curves, stress relaxation,elastic modulus, viscous modulus, dynamic viscosity and other rheological parameters.Rheometer has extensive applications in oil and gas exploration, food engineering,preparation of materials and biological engineering. Laser technology and computertechnology, the design and manufacturing of rheometer and its precision have beengreatly increased.Photoelectric coaxial cylinder rheometer can achieve a good measurement ofrheological parameters and has extensive applications in various industries and fields.Many in-depth studies on coaxial cylinder rheometer have been carried out, and themeasurement accuracy and operability has been significantly improved, whichreduced the losses for production and improved profit margins in manufacturing,mining and other industries. Therefore, this paper has great significance and value forthe improvements of coaxial cylinder rheometer.In this paper, a new rheometer was designed based on photoelectric angle sensorand its feasibility, accuracy and usefulness was verified through all kinds ofexperiments. Firstly, investigations on the design and measurement of rheometer havebeen conducted and the development direction of measurement technology has beenoutlined in this paper. Then the theoretical formula of coaxial cylinder rheometer’smeasuring principle was deduced. Problems that may appear were analyzed and somecorresponding solutions were given. The slave computer of the system was made upof an ATmega16microcontroller and its peripheral circuit.Photoelectric angle sensor can detect the angle and transmit the measured data to the host computer throughRS232serial communication. The host computer was designed with LabVIEW, whichwas convenient for data display, diagramming and data storage. The tests of differentexperimental samples and the comparison with standard values showed that, the testresults and the accuracy requirements were in line with the basic criteria of rheometer.And this paper included four main parts.In the first part, the popular rheometer at present was analyzed based on themeasuring principle and the basic principle and application of rheometer wereintroduced in detail. The theoretical formula of coaxial cylinder rheometer wasdeduced and a conclusion for different equations of fluid rheology was reached,which proVIded theoretical support to the production of coaxial cylinder rheometer.In this part, the paper analyzed the problem that may appear in the test of rheometerand some corresponding solutions were given.In the second part, a kind of photoelectric angle sensor was designed, and thebasic operation principle was introduced in detail. After many experiments, the resultshowed that it can meet the requirements of accuracy in most industrial fluidmeasurements.In the third part, the hardware and software design of rheometer were introduced.The hardware design included MCU and its peripheral circuit, the design of serialcommunication and its electric circuit, and all the parts selection. The design ofsoftware included the design of slave computer program and the host computerinterface and the detailed flow charts were listed.In the fourth part, the system was tested, including the accuracy of photoelectricangle sensor and the rheological properties of some kinds of fluids. And the resultsshowed that this rheometer can meet the requirements of accuracy in most fluidmeasurements.
