State Grid Corporation of China requests to add a type of, low cost, remote monitoring and control system for rural distribution power stations, in a new round of rural power grid renovation. Comparing with the other wireless communication technologies, Zigbee technology has many advantages including flexible application, long storage time, strong ability of self-network, low costs and high reliability et al. Therefore, it has an important application value to develop the remote monitoring and control system for rural distribution power stations based on Zigbee technology.Firstly, a type of remote monitoring and control system for rural distribution power stations is proposed based on Zigbee technology, and the system composition, their functions and operational principle are introduced.Then, the demand analysis is done for the remote monitoring and control system of rural distribution power station. The main functions are set in the system, which includes voltage and current sampling, system parameters protection, earth leakage protection, reactive power control and capacitor protection, over-current protection, guard against theft and receipt storage. The total scheme for wireless sensor network is designed based on Zigbee technology, in which the Zigbee chip is selected, and the hardware and software for sensors, routers and coordinator nodes are design, and the design flow chart of every software is given in detail.Next, the software of communication frontend processor is design, in which these modules are included such as TCP/IP communication module, data-packet analytical module, data exchange module and data memory module. The design flow charts of all module software are given, and the operational principle of every module is introduced detailed.Finally, using the host computer developing tool, Visual Studio, the software platform of remote monitoring and control system for rural distribution power stations is developed, based on which, the operating staff can implement the following operations remotely on the rural transformers:reactive power compensation control, distribution transformer protection, load management, operational parameters monitor, equipment alarm and system management.The remote monitoring and control system based on Zigbee technology developed by this paper has running on line for more than one year. The results of testing show:the all designed objiects of the system have reached and the system also runs stable.
