Wireless sensor network is a multi-hop self-organizing system, while combining sensor technology, wireless communication technology and distributed information processing technology. As more and more miniaturized sensor nodes are, the computing ability, storage ability, communication ability and battery energy of sensor nodes are limited. Sensor nodes are usually powered by battery, and it usually very hard to charge it with electricity or replace it. Therefore, using power control for wireless sensor networks to maximize the network lifetime is an issue to be solved urgently. The main research work of this paper as following:1. In practical applications, sensor nodes are distributed randomly. It is likely to occur that dense regions coexist with sparse region. A power control algorithm based on node clustering is proposed. By analyzing the geographical relations between nodes and making use of cluster analysis to cluster nodes who has similarity nature. What’s more, variable-power modulation technology is used for data transmission, in order to reduce the whole network energy consumption.2. In wireless sensor network, to minimize the energy consumption is the design principle of traditional power control algorithm. But with the new characteristics and the new direction of the wireless sensor network appears, without considering the network performance of the other makes the existence of the network becomes meaningless. A power control algorithm based on load adaptive is presented in this paper. Nodes can dynamically adjust its transmission power in accordance with the change of network load, reduce end to end delay and reduce the network energy consumption.A wireless sensor network model is built in the network simulation environment OPNET. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the new algorithms in elevating the network performance on energy consumption, network life cycle, and average delay.
