With the rapid development of wireless communication and computer networkstechnologies, various wireless network technologieshave been playing an important rolein their fields respectively. Such technologies, as WLAN, WiMAX, LTE,WSN(wireless sensor network)and so on, havethoroughly changed our daily life.Therelationship among different network technologies is gradually transferring fromcompeting with each other to complementation and interworking with each other.Besides the security threats that all kinds of networks confront, new problems arearising fromnetwork integration. Among these problems, the most important one to besolved is how to guarantee the secure authentication when the vertical handover occurs.Based on the background of the WiMAX-WLAN interworking network, this paperfocuses on researchingauthentication when vertical handovers occurin heterogeneouswireless networks. At first, the technical specification and security mechanism of twokinds of networks are introduced in this paper. By the way, the WiMAX-WLANinterworking architecture is studied and its novel security requirements are analyzed. Then, a thorough description of authentication and public key agreement are given and anew authentication and key agreement scheme based on the public key cryptographyapplied to four scenes are represented. Finally, it is analyzed that the security andperformance of this scheme that the scheme meet the requirements of delay and securityand the impact due to failure of pre-distribution key is eliminated.
