The mobile communication has been developped for more than ten years. It has entered our everyday lives. And the mobile phones become one of the most necessary facilities to take with. At the beginnings, mobile communication only supports voice services. As the requirement for data services grows faster than ever, now the mobile communication supports data services as well. But using mobile phones for visiting internet is very expensive and the data rate is really low. Then the Wireless Locoal Area Network just supplies a gap for the 3GPP data services. WLAN cost less than 3GPP to deploy. The data rate can be as high as 54Mbit/s. WLAN techonology grows very fast these years. Hot spots like cofee houses, airports, palaestras and hotels deployed WLAN. People can use laptops or intelligent mobile phones to visit Internet in these areas. So, recently, the phone which supports both 3GPP and WLAN has been developed. It was called"dual mode"phone. In the area of hot spots, the WLAN network can be used for accessing, while in other public area where 3GPP applies, the 3GPP network can be used for accessing. For the"dual mode"phone users, a technic which can interworks the 3GPP and WLAN's servies is desired. By the interworked network, users can access 3GPP's services through WLAN network, or access WLAN's services through 3GPP network.The desire from market promotes the technical research. At present, the access anthentication technic for 3GPP and WLAN interworking is under research. The project is respected to develop an authentication system for 3GPP and WLAN interworking. 3GPP subscribers can access networking by their 3GPP account. The author of this thesis took part in one of the sub-project– 3GPP AAA server researching and developing. The 3GPP AAA server is the most important device of the authentication system. It takes charge of authentication, authorization and accounting. The thesis contains following content:1. Research the authentication method for the 3GPP and WLAN network, as well as how to interwork these two networks. Research IEEE 802.1X, RADIUS, EAP-SIM, EAP-AKA, MAP, SS7 etc.; 2. Analyse the requirement of the 3GPP AAA server. Design the architecture for 3GPP AAA server, and devide modules;3. Design process flows of the modules;4. Implement the modules by coding;5. Design the test plan, and build test environment. Test the 3GPP AAA server. Analyse the test results to validate that the developing result meets expects.
